Abstract
This guide focuses on ways to research the experience of videogame play. It opens with a discussion about the benefits of studying videogames from a phenomenological perspective before presenting a series of case studies that adopt different phenomenological approaches. These case studies introduce the reader to the importance of studying embodiment in videogame play by considering ways of researching games through participant observation and interviews. Readers will learn about the fundamental theoretical assumptions and methodological challenges underpinning this vital part of game studies research through this guide. They will also learn about the consequences of phenomenological research for describing and analysing this contemporary form of play.
