Abstract

Until the middle of the nineteenth century, only natural colourants were used for textile colouration. After the advent of synthetic dyes, the use of natural colourants declined drastically and today only a small fraction of textiles that commercially traded are coloured with the natural dyes. However, there is an enormous potential of increasing the use of natural colourants for developing sustainable textile. The natural dyes can be sourced from plants, animals/insects and minerals. This chapter gives an overview of the classifications and examples of natural dyes, a brief synopsis of current research and development in textile colouration with them and challenges for commercialisation with corresponding possible solutions.
