This article examines the noir cityscape which unfolds in Jean-Claude Izzo's Fabio Montale trilogy of novels set in Marseille — Total Khéops (1995), Chourmo (1996), and Solea (1998). There is a discussion of the role of Marseille and the Mediterranean in the trilogy published in the 'Série Noire', and specifically the manner in which Montale is presented as a Mediterranean detective. An analysis is provided of the trilogy as néo-polar, as roman noir engagé, and as an existential roman noir métaphysique.
