The demographics of an aging society are undeniable, with a predicted 88% increment in the number of people aged ≥85 by the year 2031. The UK government is facing up to the challenge through increased investment into research into factors associated with maintaining muscle mass and strength, the two main modulators of physical independence in healthy older age. Of these, nutrition and exercise interventions are of great importance as they tend to be relatively easy to implement. The current is therefore a review of available published work in an attempt to determine whether a coherent and/or cohesive message can be had. Recommendations for future studies are also expanded upon to provide a basis for focused research geared towards improving quality of later life.
