'Clarinet quartet' makes a contribution to the development of music composition, both as an investigation into modernist and postmodernist practices, through the development of technical procedures. 'Clarinet quartet' is a three-movement musical composition that takes about 15 minutes to complete. The research questions 'Clarinet quartet' poses are concerned with the technical development of harmonic and rhythmic procedures in the development of the work and their subsequent structural implications within three contrasting movements. In movement one, the use of short motivic fragments is exploited within the development of a harmonic structure built on the Chord Multiplication technique first used in my 'Percussion quartet'. Throughout this movement my concern was to developed disparate layers of material connected through implied voice leadings – a technical approach considered in Cone, E ‘Strivinsky: The Progress of a Method’ in Boretz, B and Cone, E (1968) Perspectives on Schoenberg and Stravinsky. Princeton: PUP. Movement two considers the unfolding of a melodic line – here a series of seven chords are rotated to maintain their intervallic relationship with the melodic line. Much of this work developed from the application of procedures documented in Klee, P (1968) Philosophical perspectives. London: Faber and Faber. Whilst I am mindful of the work undertaken by other composers in this field (Birtwistle, Davis, Ligeti) my work has applied the development of line within alternate methods of rotation and chord multiplication. The concluding movement reworks the original harmonic material used in the first movement with an emphasis on the rhythmic unfolding of the original note row. This work was commissioned by Chinook Clarinet Quartet and was performed at the Alsager Arts Centre on the 17th October 2002. Documentation: CD recording of work; score; A4 sheet; performance details. |
