Abstract
The article tackles the epigraphy of Myanmar, which is reasonably well explored for the period before 1300 CE but lees so for later times. A certain focus is therefore put on this period, which deals with the epigraphy of the Pyus, Mons and the Myanmar people of the Bagan period, plus a short glance at the Sanskrit inscriptions of Rakhine. The epigraphy of the later period is less well known and will be treated in broad outline. Besides stone inscriptions, new materials were increasingly inscribed, such as Buddha images, bells and woven ribbons (sazigyo). This section also has more information on the survey conducted at the end of the 18th century, which had been ordered by king Badon Min (Bodawpaya).
