Abstract

This exploratory study of the Nazi-Falangist connections in Latin-America highlights the complexities and tensions that characterized Nazi-Falangist interactions in the region and posits the existence of an “entanglement of agendas” between Francoist Spain and Nazi Germany. In this context, Spain’s non belligerency and, later, benevolent neutrality towards Germany added a layer of complexity, that has not been highlighted. Despite their peripheral importance, these dynamics yielded important consequences at the end of the war, damaging Spain’s prestige, while fuelling US Pan-Americanism. Nazi-Falangist cultural policy was a political instrument not to be ignored, one whose imagined influence could significantly shape foreign policy.
