Abstract

This chapter first defines smoking and focuses on the most common form of smoking which is cigarette smoking. Evidence relating to the prevalence of smoking, and associated health effects, is then reviewed. The major part of the chapter looks at predictors of smoking initiation in adolescents, and interventions to reduce smoking initiation in this group. The chapter then considers work on electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and associations with smoking initiation in adolescents.
