Abstract
In August 2016, poet Helen Mort, along with composer William Carslake, travelled to south-eastern Greenland to cross the remote glaciers and climb mountains near Sermiligaaq Fjord. They were later joined by filmmaker Richard Jones, and together their responses formed a unique performance with original music, poetry and film footage. The Singing Glacier includes the whole of the poem sequence, accompanied by a conversation between Mort and Carslake, an essay by the literary geographer David Cooper, senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, and prints and drawings by the artist Emma Stibbon RA, whose images of ice and glaciers vividly reveal how the apparently monumental can be so fragile.
