Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive approach to the phenomenon of poverty in classical Athens. The study is based on a multidimensional and dynamic conception of poverty with the aim not only of providing a better and more complete understanding of this phenomenon, but also of how poverty was imbricated in the cultural and mental universe of Athens. The historical analysis of poverty is further enriched by approaches and contributions made to this field of study from the social sciences, especially sociology and social and cultural anthropology.
