Abstract

'What is choreographic style?' 'What is the nature of the relationship between performance, choreography, analysis and documentation?' 'How do students of dance integrate theory and practice?' 'What is embodied knowledge?' These questions are explored in Dancing off the page both through scholarly essays and practical studio projects using Labanotation. The book draws on choreographic and documentation techniques and on philosophical questions relating to the notion of 'style' in choreography and performance. Thus it offers a range of perspectives on the making, performing, analysis and documentation of dance that encourages a thoroughly integrated approach to dance studies. The contributors draw on their experience as practitioners, academics and teachers in the exploration of the nature of the relationship between performance, choreography, analysis and documentation, and the potential of notation in various forms to run as a connecting thread through the whole. With original choreographic studies and music (the latter included both as printed piano score and on a CD), Dancing off the page offers a unique opportunity for students to discover the inter-relationship of strands of dance studies.
