Abstract

This chapter sets out the rationale for the Companion to Irish Art, selectively tracking the current historiography and situating the current project in relation to different contexts including that of Irish Studies. It also addresses the significance of the contemporary in relation to the writing of Irish art history, before arguing for the production of a new more inclusive canon of Irish art and concluding with a brief synopsis of this volume’s five thematic categories.
