Abstract

There is no reference in ancient Greek literature to any Zeus Ptôchios, "protector of beggars", or to any deity bearing this epithet. However, certain literary sources support the existence of a more or less direct link between certain deities and the victims of the most extreme poverty. This link underlines both the liminal position and the relative 'integration' of the beggar in the Greek world.
