    Abstract

Violence takes many different forms. Explicit expressions-physical and/or verbal- are the easiest to recognise, however, it is also possible to distinguish an implicit violence, a symbolic one, which usually goes unnoticed. This paper attempts to show how poverty and violence appear in ancient Greek literature as the two sides of the same coin, where the “poor” are presented both as victims and as aggressors. Special attention should be given to symbolic violence in connection with the stigmatisation and criminalisation of poverty.
