    Abstract

    Children often have very stereotyped views of science and scientists, far removed from their own lives (Chambers, 1983). They have the perception that science is performed in laboratories by white-coated intellectuals (Frazzetto, 2004). Getting children to ‘become’ scientists and feel that they are actually doing science, being involved in something pertinent to them and their environment, is a goal of modern science teaching (Zhai, Jocz and Tan, 2014). Teaching methods that expose children to the varied lives of scientists and their everyday activities are therefore important, as the children can begin to see the whole range of scientific activities that make up ‘science’ and the diverse nature of scientists and their areas of work.
