    Abstract

A detailed search of the files of the Spanish Inquisition highlights hitherto unknown aspects of the family of the 17th-century female author Catalina Clara Ramírez de Guzmán. A study of the files relating to the application by her brothers to become junior Inquisition officials in 1642 is invaluable in helping build a more accurate picture of the family's social position and the rivalries and enmities they generated in Llerena (Extremadura).
