Abstract
Artefact Exhibited: 'Kyoto Wallpaper' Materials: Non-Woven Paper, Direct Dye, Lascaux water based screen printing ink, iridescent pigment, gum arabic. Technique: Hand dye, sustainable silk-screen print, laser cutting. Date made and designed: by Rachel Kelly in 2015 Details: 'Kyoto' new 'cut out' wallpaper which can be applied as a paper wall sticker direct to surface or as a cut-out paper sticker; the paper backing has a pre-applied non-toxic water release adhesive . This research is an exploration of how sustainable printing practices can be adopted for the benefit of both the studio practitioner and student. The focus of this research is twofold. Firstly it is the exploration of the value of 'Process' in teaching and learning. Secondly, the opportunity to develop new print practices such as site-specific printing and material exploration. I am undertaking this research via support from MIRIAD and external exhibition and conference outputs. I am developing a series of multidisciplinary academic workshops with the aim of testing and recording the process within teaching and learning. I am researching and recording via workshops how this practice has wider multi disciplinary learning outcomes. What is emerging from my research is an insight into how we learn and how we teach Design. The process of sustainable print making develops a design learning efficiency, addresses concerns regarding the sustainability of the screen print process and expands the potential of print design.
