    Abstract

The University and College Union branch archive at a UK university reveals that the marketisation of the higher education sector puts its employee relations (ER) under strain. Our organizational level analysis of workplace experiences highlights the failure of ER to negotiate conflicting interests in universities that progressively hybridise as organisations. The evidence exposes the latent effects of organisational hybridisation, especially managerialism, the demise of organisational trust, and the adversity of stressful environments for employees. Our findings encourage a novel sustainability-centred approach to ER to help entwine organisational effectiveness and employee well-being and recommend a wider application of the ‘practice turn’ in examining archives.
