    Abstract

Now in the hands of the Maronite community, the church of Mar Tadros lies in the mountains above Jubayl, medieval Gibelet, in the Crusader County of Tripoli in northern Lebanon. This paper is the result of art historical work undertaken by the author within the team led by Isabelle Doumet-Skaf and Georgio Capriotti under the aegis of ICCROM (The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Projects)-ATHAR. (http://www.iccrom.org/ifrcdn/eng/prog_en/05athar_en/wallpaintings_en.shtml). The conservation work on the wallpainting programme in the church, undertaken between 2009-2013, has clarified several aspects of the programme which provides the basis for the conclusions drawn here as to the circumstances under which it was painted.
