    Abstract

Natural Indigo has a rich history of existence, use and trade covering the major human civilisations and major trade routes around the world. However, its demand and production dramatically declined to a very trivial condition after the advent of synthetic indigo on the market during the last decades of the nineteenth century. This chapter provides an overview of the historical background, cultivation and production, chemistry and application method, and the present status and outlook of the natural indigo.
