    Abstract

Reviews more than 100 recent research papers and reports in information retrieval from image, audio, and text databases, with the intent of highlighting significant areas of research for non-specialists, rather than trying to be exhaustive. Starts with a summary of recent trends and challenges which predominate in text retrieval in response to the new retrieval environment of the Web and its casual users. Then presents developments in audio retrieval research, especially music and speech, including several applications of known text retrieval techniques in new research environments. Next gives considerable coverage to the problems addressed in image retrieval, particularly concept-based (manual) and content-based (automated) methods and types of query. Covers retrieval from videos to illustrate the challenges of retrieval from integrated media and the use of a combination of indexing and retrieval techniques. Continues with some discussion on the role of metadata and standards, and concludes that information retrieval is of growing significance to an increasing number of users and that it requires continuing research effort.
